– The Mary River turtle has become extremely famous on social networks with its unique appearance and ability in the turtle world. The most prominent is the “hair” standing up green on the head. In fact, this is a type of algae that clings to the head of turtles and gives them a distinctive, sassy appearance.
In addition, this turtle has two large nostrils but can still breathe through the anus.
They were a very popular pet in Australia in the 60s and 70s. But since then, their numbers have been decreasing at an alarming rate.
Reptile expert at the Zoological Society of London, Rikki Gumbs, says that the adult period of Mary River turtles ranges from 25 to 30 years.
“By the time it was realized that the Mary River turtle was vulnerable, we had already lost a large number of turtles to pet stores. There are very few turtles left now,” says Rikki.
The Zoological Society of London has listed Mary River turtles as the most vulnerable reptiles. Australia’s Department of Environment and Energy says the Mary River turtle has also been listed as critically endangered.
